Chengdu, Sichuan, China
So Thur night at 10pm we get a call from reception to come downstairs for free drinks, we had just been chilling ready to go to bed but headed down only to find out it was actually at some bar along the road and there were a few others going too – after much confusion, after all nothing is for free in this world, we went along anyway, totally not dressed for the occasion as we realise when we get to this fancy "bar street" area and then into the club to find all the well dressed chinese people!! Oh well we got given 2 bottles of Chivas Regal whisky which he mixed with green and ice tea??? I don't like whisky but this tasted delicious, the bottles of whisky kept coming and needless to say we got reeking for free, headed home in the wee small hours.

The next day I was feeling rather rough to say the least we had a supposive english breakfast and lazed about watching movies all day . Marc had got speaking to the promotor the night before and had to go along to the club at 4.30 to do a soundcheck and played for the manager who loved it – he was booked in for 11pm that night woo hoo.

So dressed a bit better we headed along for 10pm – the place was already packed – we were given our table (turns out there is no bar its all table service) and more bottles of whisky and the fancy fruit bowl with fresh nice fruit in it. We got chatting to one of the english guys that was there the night before and got to understand a bit more of chinese clubbing culture.

Firstly the night was free last night as they want to integrate us “foreigners” with the chinese nightlife and secondly to help promote the area which is called Lan Kwai Fon, named after the famous “bar street” in Hong Kong, they decided to build a new one in Chengdu and it only opened in December and they most certainly didn’t hold back – in our more sober state we had a good look around and its nothing but top end bars and clubs, chandaleirs, fancy statues, lighting and promotion things happening everywhere and nothing but good looking well dressed people . The english guy was working for the club and him and his mates getting paid to drink for free and mingle with the chinese to encourage them to buy drinks…on that note the cost of a bottle of the Chivas regal whisky we were drinking is £100 and a bottle of run of the mill champagne is £800 and its all table service and everyone has bottles of spirits or champagne on their table and by god do the chinese like to drink, many times people would come up to us and say “cheers” and you have to then down the drinks they bring you or your own the loved having us “foreigners” in there wanting photos or to dance or to drink with so I can see why they want more of us in there – we are a tourist attraction!!

Before they marry chinese women want their men to be able to buy a house and a car and have plenty of money so clubs like these are full of girls looking for husbands spashing their cash, you can buy GIANT teddy bears (the love their teddys here), the obligatory “rose” man has been replaced with people selling giant fancy flowers too, when a bottle of champagne is bought its carried to the table with a giant sparkle candle thing so everyone can see who is buying it – its money money money!

So enjoying our free drinks Marc goes on for his set, I was allowed to take photos for 5 mins tonight the promotor stood with me to fend off the scary bouncers in their bullet proof vests, army trousers & giant boots – strictly no photos allowed in the club which is strange as the chinse LOVE taking photos – anyway its anouther country ticked off the list for Marc having DJ’d in. 3 down another 15 to go !
