Chervena voda, Ruse, Bulgaria
After cruising up river most of the day, we arrive at Rousse around 6pm. This is mostly just a rest stop to stretch our legs. It's Sunday evening and all the shops are closed. Only the restaurants with their large outdoor patios are open. The main square, with a large statue and a couple of interesting fountains, is full of people enjoying a beautiful afternoon. Not a whole lot to do, so we go back to the ship for dinner.
This evening we are lucky to have some local singers and dancers board the ship and perform for us . Dressed in traditional Bulgarian costumes, they sing and dance to a live band while acting out a story about a young girl who falls in love. It is a cross between ballet and an Irish jig.
Next up was a solo singer. If you know of the show "American Idol", the first episodes of the new season feature aspiring singers who just don't have what it takes. This singer would have fit nicely into that slot. I'm sure her voice is a prized, traditional one (at least we have to believe that) but it could best be described as sounding like a billy goat on helium or a cat with its tail caught in a door. Maybe I'm being harsh but I've never heard a sound like that come out of a human body. We were treated to an hour of entertainment but, as interesting as it was, after awhile I actually started to doze off - standing up!
Next stop....Nikopol.
