On The Road Again

Chicago, Illinois, United States
Well, in the sky again!

The toilets were flooded in the hotel this morning, so there was a plumber going around to fix them . I had breakfast while he did. Made another waffle! The news said while the winds last night were severe, no funnel clouds hit Chicago, although they were filmed in other areas. So panic for nothing except scary noises and floating poop.

My flight wasn't until quarter to six in the evening (I'll ruin the surprise - it was so on time, we actually arrived in Dublin EARLY. Who knew American Airlines had it in them.) The last shuttle to leave the hotel left at 11:30, so I got on that one.

Then I spent a lot of the day reading books on my kindle, sampling all the various good ol' American foods (popcorn, donuts, pretzel rods) and walking the concourses. I was in Terminal 3, concourse H, and I walked K and L in there too - that's about 20 gates each and shops interspersed - and even walked as far as concourses E and F, by which time I was in Terminal 2 and tired of walking.

Incidentally, in Terminal 2, there were people flying from Chicago to South Bend . When it only costs $13 and an hour or two on the train. WHAT.

There is also a rather large hydroponic garden in between the two terminals, and the greenery there is grown and used by various restaurants in the airport. Pretty neat!

I had a great view of the plane from gate H15, and it was there all day, because it didn't have to come from anywhere else, and it was evening and OH MY GOD, that morning I left was horrible with waiting around. I didn't even mind the waiting around today because there was a fixed time for departure. Things were certain. I was there on my own terms, and wasn't going to be surprised into either having to rush to find a gate that had just opened, or drag out my time a bit longer. It was good.

It was entertaining for a while to listen to the American (/Filipino?) guy at the gate desk call out passenger names for checking. He couldn't really do the Irish ones: "Shaw-guh-hen-issy?" "Goorvay?" "Doh-hurty?". It also transpired that there were a lot of people with Indian names on the flight, and the poor guy had to go through some of them on his own too.

Boarding was fast and painless, and although I wasn't in Economy Plus this time, I scored an window seat, WITH an empty seat beside me!!! And it was just the two seats together, so I was able to stretch out and sleep after dinner. The movies were Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Great Gatsby, both of which I'm very fond, but have seen and therefore did not need to watch on tiny bad quality screens.
