Joyabaj, Quiché Department, Guatemala
I headed straight from work on Thursday to the carpool, after finally finding many missing things... we got to Chicago and had a yummy deep dish at Cat's house and I got to sleep on her couch- if you know anything about me, I ADORE sleeping on couches, so it was definitely the best way to spend my last night before 2 weeks on a concrete floor. We got up at 2:30am, very sad to leave such a wonderful couch. We got to O'Hare and my oh my did we have luggage. Everyone had a carry-on, and then we had eight or nine extra bags of equipment to carry. With 17 passengers, this was a lot. We got to Huston and had enough time to leisurely go to the bathroom and fill up our water bottles with American water, then head right on the plane. We got to Guatemala just fine, and had a great time going through customs with 17 people and 26 bags... one got held up in Huston so we had to go on without it (it'll get shipped to us later). We met up with our ride, and our driver and two others were very strong and kind to throw all our bags on the roof of our van, and before we knew it we were off. A three hour drive turned into a six hour drive (according to our driver) due to traffic. We got out of Guatemala City and stopped at a little oasis for a break. Then we were off again... and didn't stop until we got to Joyabaj- five more hours. Yes, the van did not fill up once on our seven hour drive with all of us and our stuff. We had some fun driving moments through the moments with some semi truck traffic, but we FINALLY made it. We stopped at a hotel to use the bathroom before we hopped on a truck to the school where we were staying for the night. Man that was a beautiful ride. Sorry mom, we were all in the bed of Mincho's pickup truck, but we could see the stars perfectly. After about forty minutes we were finally done traveling. We got up at 2:30am and got to our final destination at 9:30 (mountain time). 20 hours of travel with so many people and so much luggage. After scrambling to put up our mosquito nets and lay out our sleeping bags, we finally went to sleep. Wow that was needed. Also I wrote this a day late so I really don't want to elaborate more lol.
