Joyabaj, Quiché Department, Guatemala
today was another early day of course. Breakfast was pre-ordered again so that rocked. We hung outside waiting for the truck, and got to see the palores valordores not once, but TWICE. I can leave this country satisfied. The first two were monkeys (humans ceremonially dressed as monkeys) hanging from their knees (I’ve seen feet before on TV so I was kinda disappointed...) and then the conquistadores went and flew right-side up, making the previous monkeys look super cool. All in all, it was pretty neat. It was really cool, and I had waited and waited to see that part of the feria in person.
On site we continued cutting rebar and welding as well as began to put up chicken mesh. Since we’re doing two layers of this mesh, it takes more time and ties than I initially realized. Exactly double. Our work was interrupted by lunch with the mayor, to which I went last year, and it was great, but I am currently more invested in construction rather than fancy lunches.
We show up, same ordeal as last time- it’s the feria lunch at Poncho’s, and everyone’s there from the princesa’s to the police department. Everyone except Lencho, the mayor. Didn’t even make it to his own lunch haha. Oh well. We show up and there’s no more open tables left, except for the head table- like literally the same as a wedding. Us dirty gringos (along with Cleto, Mincho, and Petronila) go sit at the head table. Obnoxious.
However more obnoxious would be the “splendor” of the occasion. There was a scantily-dressed woman in orange singing/entertaining the crowd. I also had two shots of tequila- I forget what it’s like to be the mayor. We drive back to site afterwards, stomachs properly churned thanks to Mincho’s driving. Then we realized the sand we had shipped in was no good. Kinda a bummer, cuz that meant we had to drive out to go see other types of sand and pick the best one. I learned a lot about sand today. And I got to hang with Mincho so that was fun.
When I came back, everything was slow but it’s a lot of tying I guess. After tacking in some more chicken wire we called it a day. We had our last dinner with Mike since he leaves tomorrow morning at like 4:30.
