Unfortunately we awoke to another cool overcast day. As it was market day in Castelnuovo, we decided to head into town. The centre of town is closed off and filled with market stall selling cheap clothes and brick-a-brac. After the perfunctory cafe for adults and gelato for the girls we wandered about the stalls.
Allan found a tourist office, picked up a map and some advice that the local fort named after of the local saint, Forrtezza di Monte Alfonso was worth a visit. So the group decided this was a good idea; however the distances on the map to the fort were graphic rather than actual and somewhat truncated. We headed off walking but soon decided to send the drivers back to get the cars. The rest trudged on up the steep hill. Alice or Alicia (as the Italians call her) and Zia Franca were the first to stop and wait for the ride. Rena and Megan nearly made it but stopped before the last very steep incline. Zio Antonio and Susan made it the final bit but took a while to recover. We walked around the fort which had lovely views of the town and surrounding area. Then it was back to the villa and out later for a lovely meal at Triti, a Trattoria recommended and booked by Deiter, owner of Villa Bertagni.
