We got on one of the smallest plains ever and 20 minutes later we were on Phu Quoc Island. The airport consisted of one room with a baggage carousel in it and a few taxis outside. We had been told that Phu Quoc was a beautiful and hot island and it didn't disappoint it was a roasting 35 degrees without a cloud in the sky just what we had been waiting for. There is two main beaches on Phu Quoc, Long Beach which is the touristy bit and Sao Beach which is the classic crystal blue waters, white sand with palm trees. We opted for Sao Beach and were staying at the only hotel on the beach in a sea view bungalow.
The taxi ride there was a bumpy one because the roads seem to be half built, they just stop and turn into dirt tracks then back to tarmac roads again. We unfortunately witnessed the dangers of Vietnamese roads first hand when a taxi took out a women on a scooter. All we saw was a pair of feet sticking out from under a sheet and blood all over the road.
When we eventually got to our hotel there's not a great deal to do other than sunbath and swim so that's all we did!
Within 10 minutes of being in the sea I stepped on a sea urchin! And had to hop back to land and pull the spines out of my foot. So I gave the sea a miss for a while and we had a walk down the beach, due to the stormy weather down the beach was littered with sea weed, drift wood, shells and massive star fish which had all washed up. In the day the beach was busy with people visiting but at night there was only us and a few others staying on the resort, unfortunately being the only hotel on that side of the island they had taken advantage with the prices and food was rather expensive. The next two nights we spent on the north east side on Long Beach in another bungalow. The beach is about 30km long and not quite as picturesque as Sao Beach but had missed out on the weather so was a lot cleaner and the sea wasn't as rough.
There was a little outcrop of rocks jutting out into the sea which I went to explore leaving Mel soaking up the sun.
The rocks were full of rock pools which were stuffed with colorful fish and crabs. I took Mel back there later and we watched the sunset together.
Next stop is Cambodia which we have been told is great and the people are a lot more friendly and not as money hungry. I know its bad but I liked Vietnam as a country but its a shame about the people, if I was to go back I would go to the south where the people seem a lot nicer.
