Cloud Piercer

Lake Tekapo, Canterbury, New Zealand
The previous day I bought a fishing license which enabled me to fish anywhere in New Zealand. The shop that I bought it from had told us about a nearby canal, which was regularly fished for trout and salmon, so I spent all morning 'trying' to catch them, but again I was unsuccessful. That afternoon we headed to Mt Cook, (Aoraki,in Maori, meaning 'cloud piercer') the highest mountain in Australasia, peaking at 3754ft. We took a quick detour to a small village called Twizel to re-stock on food, and then headed to our destination. Living up to its name, we couldn't actually see the top of Mt Cook. Having a few hours before sunset, we decided to go on a short walk to the Tasman Glacier, the largest glacier in New Zealand. The short walk up the hill, opened out to a great view of the glacier and its lake, which was filled with icebergs. From all the rock deposits, you can really see how much the glacier has shrunk over the years, due to global warming. As we needed power that night to charge up our camera etc, the nearest powered campsite was about 15km away. The plan for the next day was to do a walk around the hills of Mt Cook, so we settled down for the night ready for the next day.
