A night out we wont forget

Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
The next day before heading off to catch the ferry we called in on Eddie and his friends who were all as hungry as the day before, they even tried to eat my shoe! It was our last day in the south island and a beautiful day it was. The ferry ride through the Marlborough sounds was very charm and peaceful. That is until we came to the Cook straight where it became rather choppy with large swells. We both felt a little ill but managed to talk to a guy at the information center on board about things to do in the north island and we provisionally booked a ski dive over lake Taupo! Once we'd got off the ferry and were actually heading the right way we found our campsite. That's if you can call it a campsite; it was part of a car park near the middle of town with a toilet and shower block stuck on it. It wasn't one of the nice green campsites we'd been used to and it cost $50 a night! But at least we were close to town and didn't need to drive anywhere. I'd arranged to meet up with an old school friend, Joe, and he was meeting up with us for a night out around town. We went to a couple of bars with him before meeting up with some of his friends and hitting the town. We didn't end up getting back to the camper till 6.30am! Wellington is a brilliant night out even if we did get a few strange propositions and it was great to meet up with Joe again, its nice we are still friends after all these years. The next day was a lazy hangover day, first we went for a some Japanese food then walked into town to bought a couple of DVDs to take back and watch for the rest of the day. Feeling a little more alive than the day before we checked out and parked up in town to go and look round the Te Papa museum. Its rather large and is full of the history of New Zealand, how it was formed, the unique animals alive today and the ones that are extinct, the Mauri people and their cultures as well as how the Europeans ended up here and how they changed it. They also have the worlds only Collossal Squid on display preserved in formaldehyde, it was caught by a New Zealand long line fishing boat off Antarctica. Its 8m in length, has the biggest eyes in the animal kingdom and its 3m long tentacles have teeth on the suckers!   After an interesting day at the museum we set off towards Lake Taupo. It was a five hour trip so along the way we stopped to camp for the night. The tourism radio told us about a bungee company that lets self contained campers stay the night for free in their car park, so after driving around looking for the place we eventually settled down for the night.
