Fast Burn

Maui, Hawaii, United States
We find out from guests departing its been a hellish week. Rain in 5 of 7 days ....not just brief sun showers. Makes us overanxious to tan while we can.

We rent chairs and boogie boards . The Marriott has a great beach w/ very gradual grade of soft sand near the hotel and a great sloping surf near the Villas and Sports rental. The waves are great for beginners and we watch some surfing lessons while enjoying a good pounding jumping in/out with boogie boards.

We move to the pool for lunch and then split up to read, boogie board or hot tub. We notice the girls occasionally reapplying the 30 SPF spray-on and confident they're covered.  WRONG. We get advice later from a local guide that these new aerosol tan sprays are WORTHLESS . They don't soak in and very lightly apply ...most of the mist going past your body.

By late afternoon we see a striking color change to deep red on backs, thighs, shoulders, chests...uh...oh...

We sense the dinner needs to be quick and then back for plenty of moisturizer and rest. We get a referal from some frequent guests at the pool to try Mixed Plate in Lahaina, look it up on Tripadvisor and decide to go . This is a little patio outdoors on the far west end of Front Street. We arrive to find it next door to the Old Lahaina Luau (great drums beating and music) and it is crowded.  Must be the prices....as this is the first menu with entrees under $15.   We are told there is only seating on the concrete w/ no alcohol service. They only serve drinks, by law, on the wood deck. Odd.    The food is so-so. Luau short ribs are very fatty...more tips/burnt ends. The Hawaiian mixed plate is a "luau sampler". Pulled pork w/ cabbage - good, but cold....Salmon lomi lomi - a condiment of mashed salmon, onions, tomatoes in a 2 oz cup...macaroni salad......Poi - yech!! a Hawaiian staple I'll never find appealing....and a coconut custard Huima which is predictable.     Lyn says her Mahi Mahi is cold and KT's coconut shrimp are good, but not as brilliant as the ads and people reported on Tripadvisor.    I think it is our mood combined with the late hour and an overworked kitchen.   We waited a while to be served and wasn't very attentive. Bottom line...this is a great place to drink and experience Hawaiian buffet luau food without having to pay the premium for the luau..... not dine.
