Last day on Maui leisurely at the Marriot beach and pool. Arriving at the interisland terminal for Hawaiian Airlines. Again..the airline is attempting to charge us $80 for 2 bages over the 1-per-person limit. We decide to carry the snorkel bag and a tote, but the agent seems a bit spacey and we wonder if she even put our bags on the belt. Hawaiian also changed the flight time to 30 minutes sooner than ticketed, so we have only 25 minutes to clear security. We board our flight and hop to Honolulu. The views are great for the 20 minute flight of islands, surf , and we can see the Pearl Harbor Memorial landing in Oahu. We wait in the airport while trying to standby on 2 flights to Lihue. 3 hours....we watch the World Baseball Classic and a pathetic US team lose to Japan in the semis. Finally board our flight to Lihue and arrive safely. The National rental has a couple of sedans waiting, but KT and I jump in a Cadillac SUV and the attendant willingly lets us take it our for our intermediate car with free days....reason I always use National on business. Great service.
Of course
....the bags are missing. We're told we need to wait around Lihue till 8:30 to see if they come in on the next flight. We're all tired, sunburnt still and struggling still w/ various colds/coughs. KT has lost her voice. We find a Food Saver grocery and decide to kill time shopping for the stay at the Westin Princeville. Big sticker shock. $224 for some meager staples ( Ok...some rum, champagne, beer also....but still?) I wonder if its just as reasonable to just eat out, but our Westin is a full 2 bedroom w/ 2 kitchen areas and it makes sense to make breakfasts and some lunches at our leisure. Back at the terminal....we find our bags and head north on Rt 56 by 9 pm to find the Westin on the north coast. Pitch black and no highway lights....we finally phone our way in with help of the front desk. The hotel and grounds are beautiful. Gas tiki torches around a finely manicured entry and beautiful lobby with cut flowers. Reception is great and our room nearby is welcomed luxury to the cramped Marriott. The girls sort out the sleeping arrangements as there are 3 beds in separate rooms in addition to a king-sized Westin "heavenly" bed for Lyn / I. We crash...waiting to see what the area looks like in the daylight.
