Caen, Normandy, France
We left Balen after another great breakfast and drove to Brussels to drop off Claire. Saw her house and room....it's very cost and bigger than I thought. The sun is out and as we drive south it's warming. We left Brussels around 12:30 and drove via Amiens, then north past Rouen towards Caen....all toll roads costing around 20 € by the time we reached Le Havre...the land is quite hilly with lots of pretty Canola fields....lovely scent. We left the main toll highway just after Le Havre and found a gas station then continued south on to Liseaux and then west to Caen.... The area is really pretty with rolling hills, half timbered houses and large farms with inner courtyards. The fields are either yellow with canola or green as he planting seeds are coming up.. We finally went through Caen and after putting in the coordinates we found the Ferme Manoir de Cacharat and met Valerie the owner. It's a beautifully restored farm estate dating from the 1600s, built from local limestone. They have 2 rooms in the old barn wing of the farm. We are in the larger room called the blue room. The family live in the main house which has 6 bedrooms....they have 4 children and a big local family so a big place is great. The main guest room has a huge open fireplace and opens to the garden/ orchard which gets the afternoon sun. Valerie had made a reservation for dinner at Hostellerie St Martin in Creully which is about 10 mins from here. We had a lovely meal....I had a warm goat cheese and arugula salad, Walter had a salad veggie plate and we both had a sirloin steak with frites...very yummy! Walter had an Apple Tarte for dessert. The staff spoke some English and were really nice. We had a glass of Chardonny and I had a glass of Red.... With a bottle of sparkling water and 2 coffees the total was 55€. Great evening. Now we are sitting in front of the open fire having tea and cookies. Yummy.
