Our last day in Maastricht

Bemelen, Limburg, Netherlands
We spent a great day yesterday.....nice breakfast at the BnB in Bemelen, then we went over to Jon and Marjo's for a coffee and Vlaii, then we drove to St. Peter's area and went for a 7 km walk around the sandstone quarry...it has been in operation for 100 years and will be closing in 2018.... There are grottos or tunnels all over the area from taking out the blocks of stone that used to be used for building houses....now the sandstone is crushed to use for cement. Part of the quarry has been reclaimed and has been planted with trees and a pond....eventually it will all be rehabilatated. It was a nice walk and of course since this is Limberg there is a small cafe/bar right by the crushing yard...so we stopped and had a beer in the sunshine.
After the walk we went to the cafe Chalet Bergrust at the top of St Pieter. and had beers and really yummy bitterballen.. It was a great visit but they had a function in the evening so we went back to Bemelen to freshen up and Claire was already in town and having a drink with Jill and Max who were by coincidence also in town for the evening....Walter and I walked around a bit while we waited and as we walked towards the bridge we saw her coming the other way....we went to Cafe Sjiek and of course there was an hour wait so we had some wine and a beer and some of their yummy bread and olive oil while we waited at the big bar in the dining room....Jill and Ma. Came in awhile later so we chatted before we got our table.
We all had white asperagus with truffle oil and cheese....yummy!!
We eventually went back to the BnB and showed Claire the rooms...opened our Cheverny white wine and visited all evening...

This morning it was finally sunny and 20 so after breakfast we went shopping a bit in Maastricht...went to Dilla and Kamila which is a gorgeous kitchen, home decor store....we were looking for for the cute surf egg cup hats that Marion had but found out they were only an Eastern Special and no longer in stock. It did have lovely linens and kitchen/cooking supplies so ended up buying a lemon juice gadget and Claire bought some nice olive oil. Then on to H&M, and the Bijenkorf where Claire checked out the sunglasses. We then walked over to Cafe Zuid in Wijck and had a nice lunch and beers on the terrace. We dropped Claire at the train station for her train to Brussels and started our 2 hour drive. To Schipol and the Valk hotel...boy was the highway busy and Durch drivers are very aggressive and even when the speed limit is 130 there are some that fly by.....now we are at the hotel, Walter is out on the balcony that overlooks the fields and wind turbines and it's quite warm...supposed to rain tomorrow though.
