Driving through Oberbayern

Munich, Bavaria, Germany
We woke up earlier this morning just after Sonia and Joerg left for work. We took the U 6 to Odeonplatz and then the U4 to the Hauptbahnhof to pickup the rental car. first we bought quite a good brodje with tomatoes and cheese and a so-so coffee from one of the kiosks in the station. We picked up the VW Polo which is a smaller version of the Golf but quite workable for our trip With GPS it cost 158 € and after a bit of initial confusion we set off down to Gruenwald. we used to drive there when we lived in Vaterstetten and eat at a very nice Gasthof but the town which is famous for movie production has changed a lot and we couldn't find the Gasthof. So we set off south through the Gruenwalderwald and across the Isarauen River to Baierbrunn. The road was very twisty and very green and full of that lovely new spring smell....we crossed back across the Isarauen at Schaflarn where there is a beautiful old kilos ter still used for a university program. then we drove via a very small road through Eurasberg thru Penzberg to finally Benedictbeuren where we had a cheese plate and Spargel soup. We ate at the Klosterstuberl where we used to take the kids for Wei ersnitzel and Spaetzli. The restaurant is still the same but the food was only so so. We walked through the old Klosterstuberl which is now part univ. And part Don Bosco youth hostel and then into the Basilica which has been totally renovated.. The sun came out and the area is very pretty...a little Klosterstuberl outside a small village in the foothills of the Alps....very picturesque.
We decided to drive further south tothe Kochel See and Walchen See to a very small Toll road across to the Deutsche Alpenstrasse....the area is so pretty....rolling green hill with cows and forests and Bavarian farms and of course the Isarauen right bedside the road.. We went through a wooden covered bridge constructed by the Forestry Dept which was over a waterfall/stream which I think was the source of the Isar. We passed the Sylensteinersee where there was an hydroelectric dam and power station and finally drove along the Tergensee which is a very large lake with a small boat/ ferry. We stopped for coffee and kuchen at a conditorei right on the water.. We found ourselves on another village road through another greenvalley and finally stumbled on the freewatto Salzberg and arrived in Aschau by 6:00.
Sonia's apt is really cute...right on the Prien river between 2 mountain ranges. definitely a vacation/ ferien village with some money.. There is a castle up the valley on a mountain top of course and a gondola up another mountain. By this evening the sun was shining on the eastern side of the valley and some of the peaks still had snow soit was. Rey pretty.. Instead of going out we went to the local supermarket and bought some Feldsalat, tomatoes ,mozzarella and nice crusty bun for dinner. Found a dry Pinot Grigio from Italy which was yummy too. Now we are watching Bayern Munchen lose to Real Madrid in the Champions League ......boo hoo.
We are going to have an early night and hope to enjoy a nice sunny day tomorrow traveling to Chiemsee and then bad Reichenhall and perhaps to Kufsein in Austria. Will take photos tomorrow in the sunshine ☀️⛅️
