Sunny but cool morning..had a scrumptious breakfast of multigrain baguette and regular baguette with cheese, ham, fruit, pastries and home made jam. Excellant coffee and fresh OJ. The breakfast room is the old kitchen with a huge hearth and large common table where we met 2 nice ladies from Belgium who are returning from Southern France.
Drove to Lyon and parked in the car park Antoine on the Quay St Antoine . It's a beautiful city and we went first to the tourist info, then to SNCF where we found out Claire could not change her ticket date back to Brussels...boo hoo! Undeterred we walked over one of the Passales or pedestrian bridges to Vieux Lyon and took the Funicular up the hill to the Basilica....quite the church! Beautiful gold leaf mosaics on all the walls and stunning stained glass windows. It was built to thank Mary for her help in avoiding the various plagues. We walked down the hill and explored the old city and some of the Traboules or secret covered passages originally built and used by the silk weavers. We eventually crossed the river via Passerelle St Vincent to the island and saw the Fresque des Lyonnaise which is a mural on a building depicting famous people of Lyon...Jacquard who invented the loom, chef Paul Bocuse, and Antoine St-Exuupery. We explored the area and shopping district where Claire found the H+ M and bought a couple of tops. We found Place des Terreaux and went into the Musee des Beaux Arts but the cafe was in the shade so we used the washrooms rand kept walking. Looks like a beautiful museum though.we eventually found the Place des Jacobins and a nice outside terrace and had a glass of wine. Then back to Place Bellecoeur for another wine on the patio there. Finally it was 7:30 and we went to Le Sud restaurant for a yummy supper on the outside terrace.the young waiters ran all night and at first the diners were mostly tourist but as 9:00 came the crowd was more French. It was a very nice day indeed.
