Saint-Georges-sur-Cher, Centre, France
We got up early with JF and drove towards Poitiers first and then Montsoreau which has a large chateau....on the river, up high on the bank...very pretty; just down the road and on the river Candes St Martin where we went for a walk along the river and then toured the upper walled town ramparts and the very old Romanesque church where there was a lot of restoration going on with the roof and hillside walls. Very quiet and picturesqe.....then I Abbaye Frontervaud for lunch...we stopped at Le Plantagenet Hotel for lunch and had the Menu du Jour....yummy bread sticks, salmon pate and cold petit pea soup....but then we discovered Fois de veau was actually veal liver with mashed potatoes....yuck!!!! It was actually pretty good for liver but still a bit of a surprise.... We had Rose wine and it certainly helped the experience. The servers were not particularly friendly either ....in fact a bit snotty so I pilfered some of the bread sticks for dinner. We thought about touring the Abbaye which was at one time one of the largest ecclesiastical centers in Europe but just as we approached 2 school classes came up the courtyard and it was 12 € each and it was getting late so we decided to drive on....finally Chinon.... very old walled city with a medieval fortress ruin.....wewalkedk through the old town....several timbered houses and tiny alleyways, up to the fortress which was closing ...so we found the closest LeClerqe grocery store and bought some cheese and buns and olives and wine......put in the coordinates of the B and B...Les Meslin......wwe finally arrived around 7:30 and met Yvonne the owner....what a nice person.. Both she and Jeff her husband were going our..he to play bridge and she to have a girls night out...but she gave us plates and cutlery and wine glasses and put a table cloth on the patio table...so we had a lovely al fresco dinner in the fading sunset.... The property is lovely...an old stream mill with the water cascading down the stream and 2 buildings enclosing the central yard. I heard my first cuckoo and the evening was so warm we sat outside until 9:00. The only other guests are Aussies staying in the little loft suite across from the main house where our bedroom is attached. We have our own entrance the the room is perfect. Yvonne is originally from SW of London but has live in France for 30 years so is fluent....must be wonderful.
