DAY 5: Biking at Brombachsee

Brombachsee, Bavaria, Germany
Angela, Peter, Barbara and Sigi were up and ready to go well before we were. Since this was our last day with Angela and Peter, we needed to pack our bags. After we had another lovely breakfast, we said goodbye to the lovely little garden in Katzwang and set off for a day of bicycling. Peter and Angela drove us to a large lake that lies half way between Katzwang and the next stop on our trip - Böhmfeld.

It was past noon by the time we arrived at Brombachsee and the parking lots were already full. We found a parking space at the top of the hill and took the short walk back down to the bike rental shop near the lake. The walk led us past a "ropes course" that went high up into the trees. There was even a zip line that went through the woods and all the way across the lake.

Our mission for the day was to bike around the lake. The bike rentals here are quite good, with a variety of choices and just €5 for two hours. That gave us enough time to make the circuit across the two causeways that connect a very large peninsula in the middle of the lake with the shores on either side. It was another beautiful day and we had a very good ride. We biked around the peninsula and about half the entire lake in less than two hours.

Everyone was hungry by the time we finished the bike ride, so we returned the bikes to the rental shop and climbed the hill back to our cars. We followed Peter and Angela to a little Gasthaus in a nearby village, where we had a traditional Franconian Mittagessen with Wurst, Spätzle and dumplings.

After lunch it was time to say good-bye to Angela and Peter. We enjoy our time with them so much and it's always so sad to say good-bye. We know we'll see them again in September for Angela's 60th Geburtstag.

We join Barbara and Sigi for the short drive to the little village of Böhmfeld, where we are greeted by Charlotte (Barbara and Sigi's daughter), her husband Michael, and their children - Elisabeth (5) and Jonathan (3). We will be staying with the Bauers for the next few days. The children were thrilled to see their grandparents, as well as their guests from America. We played with the children, then had a lovely Abendessen. After the children were in bed, Sigi and Barbara opened a bottle of Spanish red wine they had gotten as a gift from Charlotte. The wine was the perfect accompaniment to the stories Barbara and Sigi shared from their pilgrimage in Spain last year.
