DAY 7: Böhmfeld & Mammoths

Tuesday, August 20, 2013
Böhmfeld, Bavaria, Germany
It's Tuesday, August 20, and the weather in Böhmfeld is still a bit grey and chilly. Michael Bauer is off early this morning to work on his parent's house. Michael teaches math, physics and technology at a school in nearby Eichstadt, where he also is in charge of the computers and networks. Since classes do not start again until mid-September, he is helping his parents with major renovations to their house.

For the rest of us it was Frühstück with die Kinder, then a morning walk. Despite the development pressure from the growing Audi factory in Ingolstadt, Böhmfeld still has the charm of life in a small German village (Dorf). The kids walk to school and know most of the people and places along the way. There's also still a local butcher and baker (although we didn't see a candlestick maker). We also stopped by Elisabeth's kindergarten to see her classroom, then went to see their church, which is located right next to the school.

The Bauer family has lived in Böhmfeld for a very long time and are quite prominent in the local community. In fact, the Bauer family's farm was once the "Moier Bauer", the name given the largest farm in the area.

With the skies still threatening, we decided to load up the cars after Mittagessen and head down to the shopping mall. Charlotte had some errands to run and we wanted to check out prices for a sim card for the cell phone. Imagine our surprise, and the children's delight, when we arrived at the mall to discover it had been invaded by mammoths and saber-tooth tigers. By the time our shopping was done the children were getting restless, so we loaded up the cars to head back to Böhmfeld. Along the way we did a driving tour of the nearby Audi plant.
