DAY 11/12: Würzburg

Saturday, August 24, 2013
Wurzburg, Bavaria, Germany
We started our first full day in Wurzburg with a morning walk around the downtown area. We stopped at the market square, went by City hall and strolled across the 'old bridge' that spans the Main River. For Mittagessen we drove up to Schützenhof, a lovely restaurant that overlooks Würzburg. Although the sky was hazy, we had lovely views of the city. After lunch we drove through the countryside, stopping at several archeological and historic sites, including a 13th century chapel - Kunigundenkapelle.

On Sunday, Angela and Peter surprised us by driving up from Nürnburg to join us for Mittagessen . Harald and Christina planned a wonderful lunch at a traditional Franconian restaurant in a small country village near where Harald grew up. We were joined there by Harald's brother, Reiner, and his wife Irene. It was a wonderful way to spend our last full day in Germany.

After lunch we decided to brave the threatening weather and visit an outdoor Sägenkünstler (wood craft) festival - actually a Motorsägenkünstler (chainsaw arts) festival. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. As soon as we arrived at the festival the skies opened up. It poured! Despite the wet weather we had fun and Harald found a beautiful applewood bowl. We ended our last day in Germany having Abendessen at Lange Bögen with Christina, Harald, Peter and Anastasia, oh and Max too.
