Praia de Luz, Faro, Portugal
We've had a wonderfully lazy week, spending afternoons at the pool or the beach, and walking around Luz. Luz is basically a holiday village comprised of a dozen or more resorts and some villas all clustered around the Praia de Luz or the beach of Luz. The shopping here consists of everything holiday residents need: grocery stores, beauty shops, restaurants, bars, and a few miscellaneous shops selling hardware, souvenirs or jewelry. We've enjoyed exploring the village but it was time to venture a little farther afield--about 10 miles, actually. We hopped on the bus and rode to Lagos, the closest town and visited their old town area and walked along the marina. This is where most of the area's boating excursions leave. You can take a boat trip to see caves and rock formations or dolphins, and go out fishing. Old town still has some of the very old, like 15th century, walls and an old military fort that guards the harbor. The streets are narrow and all cobblestoned, lined with restaurants and shops. A beautiful old church is at one end of old town and the old fort at the other end. We shopped for a new shirt for each of us and then had a relaxing lunch with a liter of sangria at a sidewalk café. I had grilled sea bass--the whole fish, head and all--and it was the best I've ever tasted! We hopped the bus back to Luz about 4 in the afternoon, well-satisfied with our little exploratory trip. We're getting lazier by the day, but I think the sun, sand and laid back attitude of the Algarve have something to do with it.
