Fiesta Nacional de España

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands
There is quite a bit of controversy now in Barcelona because of the secession vote that was cancelled. I don't know all the details, but from what I gathered, the Catalonian parliament voted to call a non-binding referendum to vote on Catalonian independence. The vote was supposed to be on Nov. 9, but the Spanish parliament declared it unconstitutional, saying that any referendums should be open to all Spanish voters, not just Catalonians. It's now up to the court to decide. Obviously recently influenced by the Scottish referendum for secession, the Catalonians have a history of seeking independence from Spain.

Today, October 12, is Fiesta Nacional de España or the national day of Spain and a national holiday . In the US, it is Columbus Day. Despite the fact that Christopher Columbus was Portuguese, the Spanish claim him as a national hero and celebrate the anniversary of Columbus' landing in the New World on October 12, 1492. It probably has something to do with Queen Isabella financing his trip--but I digress.

In light of these recent political events, we woke up this morning to a huge march and demonstration on the street in front of our apartment celebrating Fiesta Nacional de Espana. This was a huge demonstration with thousands upon thousands of people carrying Spanish flags and banners in support of a united Spain. I wish we could share the chanting and singing and speeches that accompanied the parade down the Passeig de Gracia. It was really inspiring to see the strong patriotic feelings of the Spanish people marching to show their solidarity with their homeland. Apparently, a significant number of Catalonians wish to remain united with Spain. It will be interesting to see what happens politically.

Happy Columbus Day!!

I did not know that! When we were in Lisbon, they claimed Christopher Columbus as Portuguese and have a huge monument to him there, too.
