We boarded the Emerald Princess on Sunday, Dec. 3, and have spent a week cruising. Our first stop was in Cabo San Lucas where we walked to Cabo Wabo for a drink. Cabo Wabo is owned by Sammy Hagar, a musician we've seen in concert, and has a lively, rock-and-roll atmosphere mixed with colorful Mexican vibes. We then strolled back to the ship stopping in a couple different bay side bars to have a Corona and Mexican snacks. We enjoy the slower pace of Mexico and it evokes fond memories of happy times on Mexican vacations. We only had one other port stop in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. We didn't take a tour in Puntarenas as we've already seen the volcano, the river and the coffee plantation on previous cruise stops. We briefly went ashore and then spent the afternoon at the pool onboard.
We've been enjoying life on board the ship with daily activities like sun bathing by the pool, gambling in the casino, catching a comedy show and dining in the restaurants on the ship.
The meals and service in the dining rooms are part of the pleasure of a cruise.
The food in the dining room has been a bit off and on with quality, and that's a surprise as Princess usually has really good meals. Some of the meals have been overcooked and tasteless. I even had to send eggs benedict back to the kitchen one day as it was hard and dry. On the other hand, last night we celebrated Len and Fran's 50th wedding anniversary in the dining room and enjoyed lobster and chateaubriand followed by a special anniversary cake. It was very nice, and Cory ate two lobster tails! Tonight we went to SHARE, the specialty restaurant on the ship created by Chef Curtis Stone, and it was very good. We had a six course meal beautifully presented so that each dish was a work of art as well as tasty and delicious. Lots of food pictures are below showing our dinner. As the cruise goes on, the food seems to be better. Maybe we just ordered a couple of poor dishes in the beginning.
We always enjoy playing Blackjack in the casino on board, and this week was no exception. The casino dealers are friendly and we've made friends with some of our fellow cardplayers. This is definitely Cory's lucky cruise, as he started the very first afternoon in the casino by winning $125 on a Lucky Lady bet at the Blackjack table. Marla tried the slot tournament with no luck at all, but Cory fared much better in the Blackjack tournament yesterday. He won the $500 prize in the final round with 3 blackjacks out of the 7 hands dealt. It was quite a feat and dozens of fellow cruisers cheered for his victory and congratulated him. He turned around and immediately won another quick $50 at the tables. He's the lucky one on this trip!
We have another day at sea before we get to Lima and Callao, Peru, where we have excursions planned to see Peru. That will be another blog post, so stay tuned!
