Today we went on a tour of Buenos Aires and saw the highlights of the city. We visited La Boca, the area established by Italian and Spanish immigrants and known for its colorful buildings and folk art. The buildings are working class homes, covered with corrugated metal sheets and painted many colors. Folk art adorns the walls and represents the three passions of Buenos Aires people: soccer, politics, and music and tango. We drove by the Boca soccer stadium.
Next stop was the Plaza de Mayo, the city's most famous square and the heart of its political history. Originally a fort, the Casa Rosada at one side of the square is the executive office of the President of Argentina. It is from this balcony on the Casa Rosada that Eva and Juan Peron made their famous speeches to their followers after his release from prison. He was elected President the following year. We also saw the Cabildo and the church on the square.
We ended our tour in Recoleta with a visit to the cemetery of La Recoleta. This city of the dead holds 6000 mausoleums of the rich and famous in Argentina's history. Most the Argentinian presidents and people of wealth are buried here. The most famous tomb is that of Eva Duarte Peron. The tour was very interesting and gave us a great overview of the city of Argentina, as well as the history that created this city.
