“PEACE ETERNAL IN A NATION UNITED” GETTYSBURG
The words of Civil War Veterans
Peace Memorial
During the first few days of July, 1,2,3 1863 an army from
the Southern states crossed through the Blue Ridge Mountains and into southern
Pennsylvania in an arch that that placed them about 60 miles NORTH of the
Federal Capital, Washington DC. It was hoped by the Confederates that the shock
of a Southern victory attacking DC would cause the North to end the war and
allow the southern states to secede from the Union.
Just by chance, units of the two armies met outside this
small town on June 30 and unexpectedly this huge and decisive battle took place
all along the country side, the City, and the surrounding countryside. The
photos capture a miniscule moment of each tiny piece of this huge landscape and
hundreds of monuments are placed all over the countryside to explain those three
days in July which ended in the defeat of Pickett’s charge, and the “high water
mark of the Confederacy”.
Our camp site and location are great! We are just outside the
major battleground although markers of the battle surround us. The Farm that
President Eisenhower built and retired to, is almost directly across the road
from us. Camp David Maryland Presidents retreat, is maybe 30 miles south in the
mountains. Our site had everything and the large pool has been full of kids
almost every day ( don’t know if that is OK!), and there are tons of activities
going on during the weekends! We not
participating in that but we go into the Battleground each day and on most
nights have taken an hour or two to explore just before sunset.
Of course, we have found our old familiar HOSS Steak
House which has the best soup and salad bar and we visited it to celebrate our
Anniversary after traveling from Northeast Ohio. Great salad and soup , steak
was OK, but then this is 2020.
One of our little traditions is to have an Italian dinner for
Debs Birthday, and this change from our New York location had to result in a change
of plans. We did finally find one in Gettysburg, Bella Italia, and it was very
good but different. Masks in to sit down, off to eat, and on to exit! That’s the
drill for 2020 but here we were in an Italian restaurant being served by
our waitress IRELAND BOYLE, and with Spanish music in the background. It was
great food; the salad was great and we will go back but it just seemed like
everything else this crazy year- just a step or two Mixed UP !!
Starting our 2nd week here today, were getting
into a routine that combines later morning starts with early evening drives! And
we found a Wal Mart and a Wendy’s with inside seating for those extended trips
into the surrounding area. We hope the pictures give you some idea of the scope
of this place.
Debbie got me a
fantastic professional grade $$$$ camera for Retirement but….We forgot the charge
cord and the Chip back home! THIS IS
2020 ! We brought our bikes and a bike rack to ride around the paved roads
in the park, we can find NO 26 x 1.5 bike tire anywhere, the shelves are empty!
2020 STRIKES AGAIN. And to add ‘injury to insult”, I got some kind of
foot swelling (gout?), that stopped me for a day or two until my doctor called
in a prescription Friday! 20— Oh well !
