Port: Vienna
Arrival Time: 17:30
Departure Time: In port rest of day.
We got up early to see the ship enter the first lock. It was
still cool outside when we first got on the Sun Deck. As the sun got higher in
the sky, it became hot!!!! We were the last of three cruise ships in the lock.
Our captain had himself stationed at the side of the ship and guided it into the
lock, keeping about six inches between the ship and the wall!!! I don’t know
how he kept it so close without banging into the wall!! It was cool to see the
doors close and the water rise in the lock. It was only now that I saw just how
big our ship is! There were two other ships on one side and we were nearly as
long as both when we were beside both of them!!!
Kim and I picked a covered spot on the Sun Deck to watch the
scenery go by. It was cool to see how they created a bank on each side to
account for the height of the dam! If these banks give way, the whole valley
will be flooded!!!
At 10:00, we had our Safety Instruction.
It became apparent,
as we were walking back to our room to get our life vests, that we were never
going to survive a sinking. The hallways were filled with old people with canes
or just plain slow. If we had to navigate through them as the ship was sinking,
we were going to be stuck in the hallways and drown with them!!! There was
simply no way around them!!!
Today there were no included excursions, because we got into
port around 17:00. There was an optional ($85) Mozart & Strauss concert. While
it would have been nice to see it, it was too expensive.
The ship docks about two miles from the Old Town area. You
can walk it, but taking the subway (U1 – Red Line) is the best way. We are
going to get a 24-hour pass to use the transportation system. Kim and I had
planned on going into Vienna after we docked, but it started raining. Really
raining. I guess that we will wait until tomorrow!!!
At dinner tonight, we asked how much the bottle of wine was.
It was about $75. It is still high, but it is a whole lot cheaper than $300!!!
We cannot believe that we are relieved to a $75 bottle of wine!!!
