Zarautz, Basque, Spain and Canary Islands
We woke up to a beautiful day with the sun shining down on the town below. After doing a few chores and tidying for a bit, we headed off to Bilbao to meet Minh-Yen off the plane!!! We fit in the underground parking which was a relief and headed in. Her plane was a bit late so we had tried to time it so that we could meet her coming out of the gate. However, once we found our way to arrivals, there she was, waiting for us. We were sooo excited to see her and were looking forward to the next few days. We found a spot for her suitcase in the back and set off.

It was a nice sunny day, the only one we were supposed to get for a while, so we decided to do a scenic drive along the coast on our way back to camp. We arrived in Lekeito which was the start of the coastal section. Anoop popped off to the store to grab some bread and Minh-Yen and I started fixing lunch. After we had eaten quickly, we walked in to town for a look around. It was definitely a quiet town that we imagined was much more lively in the summer. It was hard to imagine the squares packed with people and all the cafés open because it was just so quiet. We felt like it was just us wandering around and the locals doing their usual thing. There was a neat church that just popped out as you came around a corner and the waterfront was really neat. The boats were painted in bright colours and the waves breaking on the small island nearby were neat to watch. We then headed back to the van so that we had enough daylight hours to finish our drive. We passed by some gardens that were built right on the side of the road with rock walls separating them – it was neat to see them shoved in wherever there was space. We continued along the drive and returned to camp in time for sunset. We went for a quick wander since there was a path in front of our campsite and looked out at the town below. There was also a view of the ruins of a dock system with rocky pillars which was once used to load and unload boats. Once the sun was really setting we headed back to camp to make dinner. Minh-Yen was introduced to doing dishes in the sanitary block which were some of the nicest facilities we have seen so far. They were immaculate and had lots of hot water which is always a bonus – especially when it is cool out!
