Tapas in San Sebastian

San Sebastián - Donostia, Basque, Spain and Canary Islands
We set off from camp for San Sebastian, about a 45 minute drive away. We found the parkade and luckily we fit so we didn't have to circle around to any others. It was the snazziest parkade we’d ever seen and had red or green lights above the spots to say if they were available or not – it made finding a spot in a long row a lot easier – and they also had classical music playing in the background! We wandered out past the beach where there were lots of people surfing and a big group heading down for a lesson. We stopped off in a bakery to pick up a treat to snack on and then made our way past the flower, fruit & veggie market into the covered market downstairs where they were selling meat and fish. We then walked along the waterfront and over near the aquarium where there were paths heading up the hill. Between the houses and the wall were all sorts of tiny gardens terraced up a steep bank. We had great views of the beach and kids taking sailing lessons. We headed over along the beachfront to the town hall which was a really neat building. It had a great square in front of it with all sorts of trees which would provide lots of shade in the summer. The railing along the waterfront had been there for 100 years! Our last stop on our self-guided tour was a huge square which had once been used for bullfights. Around the square were all these apartment buildings with numbers over the doors overlooking the square. When the bullfights were happening, the town would rent out your balcony to spectators, hence the numbers!

We then decided we were feeling a bit peckish and thought we should try out tapas. We found a place recommended in our guidebook and headed in. It had a hot tapas menu in English at the bar which was most helpful since all the signs outside were written in the local dialect. We decided to order 3 different things off the hot menu rather than all the cold, pre-prepared tapas sitting on the counter. We chose mushrooms which came in a delicious butter sauce with bread, fried cheese and a deep-fried prawn. To drink we went for a "mosto" which was a tasty white grape juice. We then decided we should try another place that was also recommended and headed down the street to find it. The bar was just about closing but they served us anyhow. We saw that they were cleaning up so didn’t bother ordering a drink. We again chose 3 tapas to try. We had a mushroom, cheese & cured ham “casserole” which we ate on bread, then we had chorizo in a bun and mushrooms wrapped in bacon. Anoop spotted one of the employees grab a tapas off the counter before they were taken away and he thought he should try one too. It was a piece of bread with an anchovy, half an egg and a prawn on top. They were all delicious and better for sharing than the previous place.

Afterwards, we headed back to camp where the bad weather was definitely blowing in. We were perched right on the edge of the cliff and the wind was fierce! We had a game of Settlers of Catan which Minh-Yen had packed with her and then made dinner. After dinner we had another game and then headed off to bed.
