Market in Malaucene and Drive to Beaune

Malaucene, Provence, France
We had a long drive ahead of us as we were planning to get to Beaune, about 450 km north of Vaison-la-Romaine. However, we couldn't resist going to one more market in nearby Malaucène before leaving. We had been to this market in September with Rod and Tan and had eaten a mouth-watering basil and tomato pastry and were now returning to see if we could be so lucky again.
The market was tiny compared to Vaison’s but it was a lot more pleasurable to browse as we weren’t shoulder-to-shoulder. I saw two old ladies in their wheelchairs sitting at the fake tattoo stand and poked my head over to see what they were doing there. They were actually getting tattoos done and it was nice to see that they were clearly enjoying it! We browsed quite a few stalls and picked up a couple last minute souvenirs. We then went all out buying fresh fruit and vegetables – Charentaise melons, multi-colored & "coeur de boeuf" tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, apricots and figs. The young lad working the fruit stand where we bought the melons clearly took his job very seriously.
He asked Megs what days we were hoping to eat the melons so that he could pick out ones of the appropriate ripeness. He very carefully inspected the melons and picked out a couple, turned them over to look at the stem, and then rejected one or two in favour of another. He did this with such seriousness that it was a real treat to watch. On our way out of the market, we finally came across the pastry stand selling the delicious tomato and basil puff pastries. We didn’t make the same mistake as last time (where we got one to share) and with all our purchases, we finally returned to the van and began the long drive up to Beaune. We passed some beautiful wine country along the way in the Côtes du Rhône, where vineyards covered entire hills on either side of the Rhône. We also passed quite a few sunflower fields and I was very glad to be able to see them in bloom as they had all been harvested when we had arrived in August last year. It was a very long, mostly uninteresting drive with very numerous but boring roundabouts.
Whenever the scenery wasn’t very interesting or I wasn’t helping navigate, I was on the computer trying to catch up on writing our blogs. Our preferred campsite in Beaune was full for the night and we had completely forgotten about making a reservation. We returned to a nearby campsite that we had stayed on our last visit to Beaune in November and checked-in just before 9pm but were lucky to get a campsite that was excellently shaded. Megs was naturally very tired and we both slept very soundly that night.
