In the heart of the Southern Group of the Cook Islands, is Aitutaki, a paradise just 220 kilometers north of the capital, Rarotonga. The island is well known for its breathtaking lagoon, with pristine turquoise water and white sandy beaches. With a population of approximately 1,800 and the economy is tourism and fishing.
Our journey unfolded with a local tour company and we were lucky to have another nice day. The highlight was an immersive swim/snorkel experience with giant trevally. Armed with Adam’s underwater camera, Mark seized the opportunity to capture these majestic creatures as our guide fed them, creating an appreciation of the strength and power of these magnificent fish. The delicate balance of the local ecosystem was revealed, prompting efforts to heal through artificial reefs, showcasing huge clams and colourful coral.
Our adventure continued with a BBQ lunch on an island, where local salads were presented in large clam shells. It was very hot but the refreshing ocean water was cooler than Tahiti, offering respite as we explored another glorious sandbank. A leisurely stroll through the lagoon led us to One Foot Island, as we met fellow tourists swimming in the turquoise waters.
As we returned to the ship, the warmth of the day left its mark, and we attended to my sunburn. We were so in ore of yet another great destination.
Underwater photos to be downloaded when we get home (we will add them later).

Looking forward to seeing Mel’s underwater photos. We might have to rename him “Jacques”!
