Vava'u is a picturesque island group located in the Kingdom of Tonga.
The Vava'u Group consists of over 50 islands, with the main island being Vava'u itself has a population of 15,000. Most of the islands are uninhabited, a few have villages, a few have very small unique resorts with great food. Like the rest of Tonga, Vava'u has a rich Polynesian culture with traditional music, dance, and crafts. The region is accessible by air and sea.
Vava'u is a popular destination for sailors, divers, and eco tourists. The region's coral reefs and caves. Our arrival is celebrated today by the school band, who play Christmas carols - we’ve not got used to the idea although it’s just around the corner. The weather today is very hot, and the most humid we’ve experienced, and within minutes we were dripping. Walking South past the shops, restaurants and hotels, many still derelict after the tsunami. We had a snorkel/dive booked today but unfortunately was cancelled last minute, which was a bit disappointing as there was no suitable replacement. So we had a short walk through the local markets and then back to the ship. Some other people on the ship said they went snorkelling in crystal clear water with visibility exceeding 100 feet. They were able to see lots of fish, star fish and turtles. Our cancellation was to spot a couple of whales on sail out today. We are at sea now for 3 days as we make our way south to Bay of Islands in New Zealand.
