We set sail on our cruise from Auckland yesterday. Today we visited Russell (Bay of Islands). It has a population of 1000 people. A little old beach town dating back to 1843 and is the country's first sea port. Russell was once known as "the hellhole of the pacific" because it was a shore leave destination for sailors, whalers and traders during the 19th century. Known for its fishing where you can catch marlin, tuna, broad bill and sharks.
We sailed in early and it was a beautiful view of the bay of islands. We were also followed by a Cunard Line Queen Victoria ship. We tendered over to Russell and walked around the boutique shops, pubs and local accomodation. The houses are made of white timber and have a "hamptons" style look. The little village was nice and friendly and the sailboats were out in force. It was busy and the cruise ships are obviously a big part of the local economy. The weather is 21 degrees overcast and a bit cool.
Our ship is small and very boutique, with only 600 passengers. The food is nothing short of exceptional and so is the service. We have enjoyed sitting out on the back terrace and having lunch looking out at the great views and the beautiful blue ocean. Getting a seat anywhere has never been a problem and sometimes we feel like like ship is only half full. (It's really 95% full).
Tomorrow we have a day at sea on our way to Norfolk Island. We might experience some high swell from cyclone Oma. Mark is hoping but me not so much!!!
