Milford Sound is a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's south Island, within Fjordland National Park. It has be judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey (by the 2008 Travellers' Choice Destinations Awards by Trip Advisor) and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination.
Milford Sound is formed by the actions of glaciers and is situated 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea at Dale Point. It is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 metres or more on the either side.
Milford Sound has two permanent waterfalls all year round, Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls. There are 550,000 to 1 million visitors come here each year. By road Milford Sound is 307km from Queenstown and 279km from Invercargill (about 4 hours drive).
We sailed into Milford Sound this morning around 9am to some absolutely stunning views. The temperature was 6 degrees with an expected top of 15 around lunchtime. The weather was sunny and the visibility was just perfect. We were told that the top of the mountains are rarely seen due to the regular days of the fog and rain and they can have up to 10 inches of rain a day and very few sunny days throughout the year. The enormity of this fjord was mind blowing. The water was 300 metres deep the mountains climbing vertically from the waters edge, were some of the highest we have seen. Some with snow on their peaks all year round.
We went out on the ships Zodiacs which are small inflatable boats with 10 people on board. Mark and I sat right at up the front and had a great view. Our guide took us right up to the cliffs surrounding the shoreline where we saw fur seals, cascades and loads of vegetation. The rocks from all the water runoff were colourful and were a mix of limestone, sandstone and granite, shimmering in the sunshine. After about an hour and a half we got back on the ship and enjoyed lunch, beers and champagne looking at the beautiful Stirling Falls. Wow, what a spectacular back drop. We have had a incredible day here in Milford Sound, one we will never forget.
