Port Chalmers (Dunedin). Is the main port for the city of Dunedin. Situated in a natural amphitheatre at the head of a long fjord like inlet. Dunedin was the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand, founded in 1848. Not long afterwards, gold was discovered in the regions and the province quickly became the richest and most influential in the colony. Numerous distinctive and historic buildings remain from the time of its predominately Scottish settlers, preserving its architectural heritage.
We sailed in this morning with a top of 18 degrees to Port Chalmers where we could smell the pine logs on shore, ready for export, as we docked. It was a 20 minute shuttle ride to Dunedin. Dunedin has a population of 120,000 people, 20,000 are university students. Otago University is New Zealand's first University. Located in a beautiful setting with a stream running through the middle of it and some beautiful buildings.
We arrived into the centre of town where we caught a hop on hop off bus. We travelled to Baldwin Street, which is one the worlds steepest street (we didn't walk it).
We then went to the railway station, this building was incredible, built in 1873 and is still one the most photographed places in New Zealand. Across the road was the old Cadbury factory that recently closed down and 300 people lost their jobs. Cadbury is not that popular here anymore!! There are 2 brewery's here as well, but we didn't visit them. We browsed through the shops and found some merino and possum socks, which are big sellers here. They have a shop called Farmers which was like a David Jones. Supermarkets are called Countdown with the Woolworths logo. They don't have Coles here. Last stop was a pub that has their own local lager and we sat on the sidewalk outside and took in the local sites. The Eagles played here last night and the town was very busy. Next stop Akaroa (Christchurch).
