Akaroa (Christchurch). Set on a beautiful sheltered harbour and nestled in the the heart of an ancient volcano, Akaroa is a popular resort village. Located 80 Kms southeast of Christchurch. Many street names are of French origin because because of its French whaling and colonial history. One of the first settlements in the Canterbury region of the South New Zealand Island, the town has a rich Maori and British heritage, as well as its French History. Today, the town centre is dotted with colonial architecture and the harbour area is lined with boutiques and cafes.
As we have already visited Christchurch we just explored beautiful Akaroa today. We strolled down this beautiful cottage seaside village. We stopped for coffee and booked a 2 hour cruise on a 52 foot boat. Mark was in his element. Kylie was doing okay sitting next to the captain on the flybridge!!! We saw albatross, rare Hector Dolphins, penguins and fur seals. The weather was a beautiful 25 degrees. We sat back at a local bar and caught up with our friends Michelle and Ian and their puppy Frankie (Drove down in the afternoon from Christchurch). They took us to a local bar that was over the water and overlooked the bay. So surprised Mark didn't find this bar earlier. Nice to have some local knowledge and to see them again. Until next time. Next stop Kaikoura.
