Kaikoura is backed by a range of Southern Alps and fronted by a magnificent stretch of sea coast. Kaikoura is famous for whale and dolphin watching and for the large colony of Southern Fur Seals found nearby. The coastal areas are also draw many seabirds such as albatrosses close to shore. The town has a population of 2000 people and is located 180km north of Christchurch. The infrastructure of Kaikoura was heavily damaged in the 2016 earthquake which also caused 2 deaths in the area. The rocks in the bay and surrounding region were uplifted by as much as 2 metres.
The weather is a beautiful 25 degrees and there is snow on the mountain tops.
The little village is surrounded by a mountain range and beautiful blue seas. The township was small with little shops and pubs. New Zealand has great fish and chips and we have always seen a local takeaway in each town we've visited. The beaches are covered in round rocks. The scenery is like a postcard. It was also popular with camper vans and many of them lined the street. Next stop Nelson.
