Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand
Wellington is nestled between a magnificent harbour and a natural amphitheatre of forest clad hills. Wellington is the Capital City of New Zealand and is the home of parliament. Its compact size, combines with cultural sophistication make it New Zealand's most inspiring urban destination. Wellington art scene is flourishing, with numerous galleries and craft markets displaying the work of its top artist and crafts people. Wellington has a population of 418,500. Located on the peninsula between Cook strait and Wellington Harbour. This is where you can catch the Cook Ferry and it will take your vehicle from the North or South Island. They have 1.2 million ferry crossings a year.
Today we understood why they call it windy Wellington. In the city centre we caught the cable car up the mountain for panoramic views over the city and harbour.
We walked the streets and found the local "Cuba Street", with lots of bars, cafes and shops. We then visited the Museum as they had exhibitions including the Terracotta Warriors, Gallipoli and Phar Lap's skeleton. The Warriors lay secretly buried for over 2,200 years. In 1974 this life sized army was discovered, armed and ready to defend the First Emperior in the afterlife. The Gallipoli exhibition was well done and very moving. We found a brewery to escape the strong wind and then headed back to the ship. Next stop Napier.
