Napier is dubbed the art deco capital of the world. Napier was rebuilt in the early 1930's following a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which is recorded as the New Zealand's largest natural disaster to date. The new buildings reflected the architectural styles of the time, stripped classical, spanish mission and art deco. Napier is a coastal city set amid the renowned wine producing region of Hawke's Bay. It has a population of 62,000. Temperature is 25 degrees today. We walked the streets with lots of vintage stores and old pubs and cars.
We then went on a winery tour of some local vineyards. What a beautiful countryside and there are lots of orchards including apples and pear grown here. The guide mentioned that they have so much fruit and not enough people to pick them. We stopped on the side of the road and ran into an orchard and picked some beautiful fresh apples to taste. Our first winery was Church Road Wines, a beautiful cellar door and nice wines, we can buy these at Dan Murphys. So one to remember when we get home. The next 3 wineries were more boutique and run by local families, they were Ashridge, Trinity HIll and Askerne. We finished the tour by driving to Te Mata Peak and we had an amazing view overlooking Hawkes Bay and Napier. Topped off to a great day. Next stop Gisborne.
