Zermatt, Valais, Switzerland
We drove along the shore of Lake Maggiore and crossed the border into Italy, the weather was sunny and the visibility was great. We stopped in Stresa, a little town overlooking the lake. We strolled through the old town and enjoyed lunch in the plaza. We then continued over the Simpson Pass into the Swiss Valais an area renowned for its excellent wines and great mountain resorts. We stopped at Tasch and boarded a mountain train to climb the last few miles up to car free Zamatt, a picturesque cluster of rustic chalets.
Zermatt, is a mountain resort renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking. The town, at an elevation of around 1,600m, lies below the iconic, pyramid-shaped Matterhorn peak. Its main street, Bahnhofstrasse is lined with boutique shops, hotels and restaurants. There are public outdoor rinks for ice-skating and curling. Our hotel is really nice with 360 degrees fire place and surrounded by chairs with lambs wool on the seats. It is freezing here currently 0 degrees. Inside these hotels it is  very warm and so is our room. We are not sure of what heating they have but we are not cold at all. Sitting by the fire was very cosy and romantic. It was everything we imagined a Swiss Chalet would be. The larger style of beer is excellent, so are many of the red wines.
The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetrical pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 metres high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps in Europe. This morning we have travelled on 3 cable cars to get to the top of the Matterhorn.. What a incredible experience, we overlooked Mount Blanc peak in France. This was just mind blowing a experience and one we will never forget. The Swiss have the state of the art ski slopes facilities and they have a very modern infrastructure in Zermatt to cope with this. You can see why many people come here to ski in one of the most breathtaking places in the world. We then travelled to the country side passing the vineyards and apricots trees until we reached Lake Geneva.
