An integral part of the modern city is the Medieval City that remains within. It is a mixture of different architectures from various historical periods dominated by the period when the order of St. John of Jerusalem occupied Rhodes and the Ottoman period. About 1500 to 1900AD.
The quarters of the various nationalities of the Knights of St.John are located on the pebble paved Avenue of Knights. At the beginning of the Avenue of Museum Square is where the Knight's Hospital is located, which currently houses the Archeological Museum that we explored. At the end of the Avenue of Knights, at Kleovoulos Square, rises the magnificent Palace of the Grand Master. (Checked this out too) This was originally a Byzantine fortress (7th Century AD), which later (at the beginning of the 14th Century) housed the administrative centre of the Order of the Knights. In 1856 it was destroyed by an explosion and at the end of the 1930's, during the Italian occupation, it was rebuilt to be used as the home of the Italian Commander. We walked the streets of the old town, which had everything from, tourist trinkets, to handbags, clothes, leather goods, jewellery and much much more.
We then walked the wharf where there was hundreds of boat charters available and they all wanted our business. The water was very clear and a beautiful turquoise blue. We arrived at the rocky beach of Rhodes and it was packed with deck chairs, bean bags and gazebos, restaurants and bars and lots of people, it was packed. The weather today was 32 degrees. Rhodes has a population of 90,000. We had lunch overlooking the bay, it was nice with the breeze blowing through in the shade. Back to the ship for our first swim of the holiday which was refreshing. New drink (thanks Craig) Canadian Club, dry ginger ale and fresh lime with heaps of ice. Very refreshing!!
