Kristiansand, Agder, Norway
Kristiansand is the largest city located between Oslo and Stavanger. Kristiansand is located in Norway’s southern coast and has long been a favourite summer holidays spot for Norwegians. The sea and surrounding fjords are perfect for recreational activities like fishing and sailing. With a population of 88,500, Kristiansand is the fifth largest city and sixth largest municipality in Norway. The southern town is also one of the most popular destinations.
Even though it’s a large town, by Norwegian standards, you don’t need to travel far to find yourself alone on a beautiful beach or on a private island. It’s slightly warmer climate is what makes Kristiansand such an attractive destination and many Scandinavians have a holiday home or cabin in the surrounding area. On our early morning work the first stop was the Fish Market, with tanks full of live fish, fresh fresh and salted fish. You could dine or buy fresh. Then into the old town renowned for its charming white timber-clad houses and beautiful colourful flowers.  There appeared to be a large concert last night so some streets were closed. We made our way to the river where girls were swimming in the Otra River. Mark tested the water temperature which was slightly on the cool side but surprisingly, despite being very close to the ocean it was fresh water and although very clear we saw no fish. In the middle of the old town was the cathedral, it was under repair so just a photo of the outside today. Making our way back to the ship we visited the local marina and watched a couple of boat departures and noticed the rather unique way they were tied up. It’s always interesting to see how things are done in other countries. The weather was totally sunny today and a pleasant 24 degrees. There are lots of little islands outside  Kristiansand with really old traditional Norwegian fisherman’s houses. One of the shop assistants explained that they are the nicest houses and places to live in the area. She also mentioned they don’t know how to respond to us when asked how they are as this is not the normal way you greet people here in Norway. Unfortunately we didn’t quite understand how she described their way of saying hello. There were really nice beautiful little shops and some chain stores. After more than 12,000 steps it was time to go back to the ship for a relaxing lunch. Kristiansand is a beautiful  place, our short stop was a lovely one.
