Catching Up On First Few Days

We rolled out of Durham, NC on Thursday morning, July 2. We drove for about 5 hours and arrived at Kanawaha State Park just outside of Charleston, WV. Ended up with a great site up on a hill. Beautiful woodsy park with a stream running through it. It started raining quite hard so we hunkered down for an evening of board games.

We did not have cell service at the campground and only able to get wifi at the restroom-thus late getting this blog started .

Friday morning we were up at 6am to get up and on our way to the Lansing, WV for an all day whitewater rafting trip down the Lower New River. We had a blast. Our guide Brenton was great-knew quite a bit of history about the area and was very attentive in keeping Elena safe. Not to brag, but we were the only raft that did not dump anyone in the water in Class 3-5 Rapids.
We stopped on the bank for lunch and exploring and then stopped for a chance to swim in a calm area of the river. One man who dumped at a whirlpool was sucked in and down for about 45 seconds before it spit him out. He was quite shaken. All in all a great day. Elena loved it!
We arrived back at the campsite about 6pm and the sky let loose again. We had planned on attending an outdoor concert and fireworks, but it was canceled due to torrential downpour.
Instead we made fresh ravioli and played Scrabble. Elena is quite a whiz at Scrabble.

Saturday morning still brought rain, so Pappy and Elena went to town and saw Jurrassic World at the theater.
The afternoon brought sunshine and a beautiful day. We each made a paper boat and had a boat race. Mia's should have been the Titanic as it sunk fairly soon after launching. Elena's hung in a it longer before joining Mia's at the boat cometary. Pappy was the victor as he made it way down stream.
We ended the day roasting hot dogs and making s'mores and having some fun with sparklers.
We taught Elena how to play Racko and she caught on immediately and proceeded to win most of the time.

Today is Sunday and we are in route to Lexington, Ky to stay 3 days at the Kentucky Horse Park.
