We arrived at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky last Sunday and camped at the Kentucky Horse Park Campground. Was a very nice campground with many amenities and we had a large shade tree on our site.
That afternoon Elena and I visited the Kentucky Race Horse Retirement Center
. The tour we were able to take was up close and personal with many of the horses- of whom many were former Derby winners. Our guide shared so many interesting facts and info concerning the history of each horse and the racing world. Elena had a great time feeding and petting the horses.
Elena had never had fondue and so wanted to try it. There was a Melting Pot in Lexington, so off we went that evening. We had a ball. Ordered 3 courses. Began with cheese fondue, salad, then beef, chicken, shrimp that we battered and fried and topped it off with decadent chocolate fondue. Made a great memory and Elena loved it. We were all full up to our ears when we left.
Monday, Rob had so much catching up to do workwise that he had to pass on going into the actual horse park. Elena and I rode our bikes over-which gave us a great overview of the entire park. Saw many horses and riders practicing for various events. We had a great day visiting the museums and attending several of the horse shows
. It is a beautiful facility as is the state of Kentucky.
We learned so many amazing facts about the vast horse world, but with that being said, what we now know would fit on the top of a pinhead-as it is another whole entity to itself.
We grilled out that evening and just beat a storm that rolled in. The next morning we woke to rain and it continued all day. Gave Elena a chance to start working on her quilt. She did so well and after a few blocks had gained the confidence she needed to use the sewing machine. Last evening we had quite a storm come through with wind, hail, and heavy rain. There were storm warning out as well as flood warnings. We hunkered down and played Racko.
Elena was so excited yesterday as she and her best friend in Spain-Carolina, were able to FaceTime. They laughed and caught up for about 2 hours.
We are in route now to the southern part of Illinois. It is still raining,so we are hoping for some sunshine when we arrive .
Will be staying at Rend Lake State Park for 2 days. The park is said to have numerous lakes and great bicycle trails.
Life is Good and we are enjoying our time with Elena. She is a wonderful travel companion!
