CHERRAPUNJEE to SHILLONG to GUWAHATI (Assam) 154km
Midland GH (1000Rs / $16) Non-AC Double without breakfast

Sumo to Shillong 70Rs pp 2 hours
Sumo to Guwahati 170Rs pp 3 hours
Left at 6:25 am. Arrived at noon.

Conveniently, we caught a sumo to Shillong (2 hours) 70 Rs at Laitkynsew, the little village just beyond the resort. A 10 minute walk. And in Shillong we were dropped off right at sumo stand to Guwahati. We only waited about 20 minutes before that sumo filled up and we took off. And 3 hours later, we were let off in front of Midland Guest House in Guwahati.

It was a pretty ride on a nice day. The busy stretch between Shillong and Guwahati has much of the road under construction. They are working to make it a beautifully wide 4-lane divided highway. It will be safe when finished. But for now, drivers make up their own rules. If the left side is being worked on, it is okay to drive against the normal flow and drive on the right. Such improvisation caught up with a tanker and a truck, both of whom felt driving on the same lane in opposite directions would work for them. It did until it didn't. The vehicles collided.

Our stored luggage was already in the room. I noticed suspect sheets and I asked for clean sheets and pillowcases which they provided without complaining. A no frills room, good enough for one night. We had the fan going full blast because it was hot. We went for a pizza at Pizza Hut after which Dave went out to the Airtel mobile office while I got cleaned up. My sinus congestion has also settled in my lungs, I feel like shit.

Dave thinks he got his cellphone problem figured out. It worked in Meghalaya State and quit working again in Assam State. A new SIM, issued in Assam, should do the trick. But Airtel Assam apparently had rejected his application and just now it has been resubmitted. This will delay the Assam activation for a few more days. The Government makes it a pain for foreigners to get SIM cards in India.

Tomorrow we will go to Tezpur. From there, we will enter Aranachel Pradesh, the state which requires a $200 permit to enter. We are looking forward to it.
