A Guarda, Galicia, Spain and Canary Islands
After the Picos we headed west but the weather had turned inclement. So we kept going to A Guarda on the Atlantic coast. A Guarda is a border town with Caminha in Portugal just across the river. Campsite overlooking he river. Famed for its seafood we tucked into a seafood platter lunch at one of the seafront restaurants.
A Guarda was very quiet, lots of empty shops, nothing going on. A ferry across the river to Caminha in Portugal and what a difference. Lively, people about in the cafes of the towns square, restaurants open and better kept buildings showing off the Portuguese liking of tiles
Camped at Camping Santa Tecla on the River Minho. Cycled around the coast and into A Guarda. Attempted to cycle further north up the coast but the route was too difficult so walked. Another day cycled north along the road but that was somewhat boring and did not really lead anywhere
A Guarda is worth visiting primarily for the remains of a large Celtic settlement. A Guarda's Celtic settlement dates from between 600 and 200 BC. It is on the slopes of Monte de Santa Tecla and there are the remains of about a hundred round stone houses. These are all enclosed by a stone wall running the perimeter of the site. A couple of them have been restored, complete with thatched rooves, to give you an idea of what they looked like when they were habited you proceed to the top of the hill there is a church and an archeological museum containing finds from the site.View from the Monte de Santa Tecla over the Ria and estuary below are another good reason to visit the Celtic Settlement. The day we decided to visit the hill fort it was wet and very misty at the top but just as we were leaving the weather quickly cleared for views of A Guarda and the coast
