Introduction to Lanzarote

Lanzarote is in the Canary Islands and also a part of Spain. The Canaries are a popular tourist destination, especially in the winter months. But whereas the likes of Gran Canaria and Tenerife are very touristy Lanzarote has been sparred the high rise development. Largely due to the efforts of Cesar Manrique - but more about that and Cesar in a later chapter
A volcanic island with numerous old classically shaped volcano canes which have been dormant for a long time. Together with a still active area in the southwest, a result of the dramatic volcanic activity of 1730 - 1736. Again, more about that later
The Azores high pressure system in the Atlantic ensures constant north easterly winds blow across the island. And with high ground in the north this often results in cloudier conditions in the north and sunnier ones in the south and east- where the tourist spots are located
