Flight from Kathmandu to Paro in Bhutan. Along the Himalaya range and fantastic views, especially seeing Everest
Flight into Paro airport is very exciting as the aircraft has to bank this way then that way to weave its way through the mountains to get a straight line onto the runway at Paro. Phew !!
Check in at the Olathang Hotel. Afternoon a short drive to the cliff temples of Dzong Draka A beautiful cluster of 16th century cliff temples set above the small village of Bondhey, overlooking the Paro valley. Short walk but a good leg stretch and get use to the altitude of over 7,000ft. Also time for a wander around the streets of Paro. Overnigfht at the Olathang hotel
Next day short drive from hotel to the start of the walk to Tigers Nest, Taktsang Monastery. Perched sone 2,000ft up on the cliffs overlooking the valley and was said to be where the legendary saint Guru Padma Sambhava flew from Tibet on the back of a tiger to defeat 5 demons who were opposing the spread of Buddhism in Bhutan. Steep climb through the woods about 1.5 - 2 hrs to a teahouse view point. From there its a steep climb down and then up (and then back down and up, of course !) to reach the monastery gate and the monastery buildings. We went the whole way. Then its down, down, down to the trail head
Another wander in the streets of Paro and back to the Olathang
