Cold and clear on Lake Labarge

Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

We were up and about by 9:00 and after a huge breakfast went looking for some skidoo pants for me . What I'd brought was not going to be enough for -17 C. Then we went exploring around town with some walk-about in the cold. Stopped at the National Heritage site at The Klondike paddle wheeler and a short walk along the Yukon River to where The Canadian paddle wheeler sank. The community has done a wonderful job of recreating the boat with just a few bits of the machinery that was recovered.

After a quick fast food lunch it was back to the airport to drop off the car and wait for our ride to Lake Labarge. It's about a 45 minute drive. Ned came across the lake with 12 dogs and three sleds ahead of himself on a snow mobile. We loaded up our gear, split the dogs into 3 teams, got some brief instructions on mushing and were on our way across the lake. My face got a little cold but the rest of me was fine! Perfectly gorgeous day. About -10 by then. Took about 20 minutes to go 6 miles so those dogs were scooting right along. Mine kept catching up (we were last on the trail) so I was constantly stepping on the drag to slow them down. It was wonderful!

After arriving at Cathers home place and getting the dogs out of their harnesses and off the gang line, we took the dogs one by one, to their own little yards and then were shown to our cabins. I had my own little spot in the woods with my own private privy. The cabin has a small propane heater so it's very cozy. After settling in we made our way to the cook shack for a wonderful supper and great conversation. Jennine started watering and feeding the dogs around 8:30 and so we had a lovely chorus for background music. It was dark by then and the stars were out - beautiful! - but no Aurora. I got up a few times to check. It was crisp but still only -10.
