Parliament Buildings and a bus pass

Tuesday, March 21, 2017
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
After a pretty decent rest, we were up in time to get morning passes for the Parliamentary Tour. We even managed to get a tour time that allowed us to have breakfast first. A diner again, with a $5 breakfast special.

The tour was great . Only 45 minutes or so, but really well done. After the formal tour we took the elevator up the Peace Tower and spent some time there, just looking around the city. Very impressive views from there. I’d never considered that elevators don’t necessarily drop straight down. The one in the Peace Tower is built at a 9 degree angle in order to get past the chapel roof. Very cool.

From there we caught a bus (bought an all day pass) to Gateneau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River and got off at the terminus, right by the Museum of Canadian History. It’s actually two buildings, but we never went inside to see what’s actually in there. Just found the cafeteria and had some lunch (and a Beavertail!) and then went walking to enjoy the view. It’s directly across the river from the Parliament Buildings. Took some photos, had a closer look at some of the monuments and then caught the bus back to Ottawa. Next stop was the National Gallery, where the huge black spider sculpture is located. We were too late for the museum but spent some time and money at the shop there

From there we walked, through wet snow and slush, to the monument honouring the surveyors who mapped out our country and then made our way to Byward, a popular area for hanging out in Ottawa, to find a place to have supper. We found Dunn’s Deli, which is actually a big restaurant, had supper there and by then were ready for the hotel. On the way back we encountered Oscar Peterson. Hit a key on the piano and it plays a short riff. Very Cool!!

It was another early get-up to catch the bus to the airport. Got there in time to grab a quick breakfast and then through security to catch our uneventful flight home - just the way I like it. I actually watched a movie. We were in Vancouver by 9:30 a.m.

After I got home, I went to pick up Minnie, brought her home with me and crashed for the rest of the day.

It’s always good to get home.
