Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, Matabeleland North Province, Zimbabwe
On reflection we had not bigged up the Chobe River drive enough on our previous blog.  It really was a fab drive and as we spent so long enjoying it, we did not get to our guest house in Kasane until after dark.  As we were not insured to drive at night and not a delivery service in sight, we tucked into our dry noodle reserves and reflected on our amazing day with a cold beer or two.
The next day we were up and out by 0630, but not the usual self-drive safari, today was a chauffeur driven tour to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side.  Transiting immigration was less painful than had been described by our tour guide and within a few hours we were standing on viewpoint 1 of 16 admiring the spectacular falls.  Despite the drought we keep harping on about, the falls were flowing over about ¼ of the entire width, which is probably about 1 Km in total.  The Zambia side was dry but we always knew it was not possible to visit Kruger, the Okovango Delta, Victoria Falls and Etosha at optimum viewing times.   We chose October for the best wildlife activity as it is so dry the animal concentration is at the few and far between water supplies and anyway, our guide said in full flow you can’t see the falls that well
due to all the mist and spray.
We also walked across the bridge to the Zambia side, and being the saddos that we are, used 30 mins in Zambia to tick off another country visited.
Our day out was compliments of our parents as we put our xmas money aside for this special day. Last year was swimming with Whale Sharks in the Philippines and this year, a day out at Victoria Falls, so a big public thank you to all our parents.
As we were on a guided tour, we were whisked off after the falls to a swanky lodge for lunch and paid $40 for two sandwiches and bottle of water in front of a man made waterhole.  Everything we normally hate, but the only consolation was they did a very good vulture conservation presentation, which concluded with the feeding of hundreds of ravenous vultures.  It was really interesting to learn how the vultures give away poachers locations so they are poisoned to such an extent several variants of now on the endangered species list.
A long hot tiring day, but another world famous landmark ticked off.

Wow. The falls look so good. Last time I saw them was 1999. I think I was stood in the same place. I got chased by a bull elephant which wasn’t fun. Great pics and videos. Thanks for the memories.
