Hovenweep National Monument, Utah, United States

Sometimes it feels as though I’ve been almost everywhere in
the American West, but I can still find new sights or parks I haven’t been to
yet or only had a very perfunctory visit to previously . Hovenweep National
Monument is one such place. The park contains several units on the
Colorado-Utah border showcasing Anazazi Indian ruins of the same general period
as Mesa Verde. Hovenweep likely gets passed over on the way to much larger and
more spectacularly sited cliff dwellings at Anasazi.

Doug and made a morning stop at the Square Tower Group of
ruins, the largest complex at Hovenweep and where the visitor center is
located. The site contains a two-mile long circular trail to numerous
canyonside ruins in that was once a settlement believed by archaeologists to
have a population around 5,000.
